Church Planting
The Evangelical Free Church has been a functioning organization in the United States since 1884. In 1950 a merger created the current Evangelical Free Church of America (EFCA.) The EFCA is divided into 20 geographical districts across the United States. One of these districts is the Central District which includes the southeastern quarter of South Dakota, Iowa, Missouri and Arkansas in its geographical makeup. As of the Central District Conference in 2006, there are now 117 churches, 3 associate churches, 4 church plants and 6 projects in the Central District.
The Central District has seen significant growth in the number of churches since 1989 when there were 49 churches. In 1989 the Central District Conference ushered in the Church Planting Program, using men who had been experienced pastors and would serve as Church Planting Missionaries (CPM.) The CPM would raise his own support, assist groups in planting their own local churches, and serve as pastor until the church was established enough financially to pay their own pastor. The Church Planting Program has successfully helped a number of people and pastors across the District plant churches in their own communities.
